Phil Goff says he is the party’s best shot of winning the next election.
The besieged Labour leader has been battling poor poll results and leaks from within his own caucus as the party’s prospects look increasingly dismal with less than 100 days to go till the election.
During a day on the campaign trail in West Auckland, Mr Goff acknowledged that voters had had “the phone off the hook” since he became leader.
But when asked if there was someone in his caucus who might have a better shot at winning the election, he said: “Frankly, no. If I did think there was somebody, I would say, `Hey, boy, have I got an offer for you.”‘
He reiterated that, when the time came, he would step aside rather than wait to be rolled by his colleagues.

Jonathan cited the high cost of organizing party primaries and general elections and the instability that regularly follows elections as reasons for proposing the amendment. Jonathan has not, however, provided any details about the length of the proposed extended term. Find more…

There’s a strong connection between studying a law degree and going on to work in the legal profession. However, before you present us with the obvious fact of the week award, it’s not the case that every law student will go on to don a barrister’s wig, or become a solicitor.
And, unless you’re utterly convinced, to borrow some legal terminology, beyond a reasonable doubt, that a high-flying law career is for you, it’s important to remember there are other choices out there, according to blogger Tim Bratton.
He wrote: “If you want to go and work in Big Law having thought about it, then great, it offers an excellent career.
WASHINGTON — Even as the debt clock ticks down to fiscal bedlam, President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner continued their public slugfest — bickering back and forth on national TV last night, with no compromise in sight.
Obama’s prime-time White House address ripped House Republicans for refusing to prevent a government default with their “cuts-only approach” to debt reduction.
“We can’t allow the American people to become collateral damage to Washington’s political warfare,” Obama insisted.

FORT WORTH — State Rep. Lon Burnam and his wife moved onto Sixth Avenue in 1981, and 30 years later, the couple is still there.
The close-knit feel of the Fairmount neighborhood still appeals to them, as do its historic homes.
Burnam has represented Fairmount in the Texas House of Representatives since 1997, and he’s hoping it stays that way.
