Severson aims at Klobuchar with Cain, Ryan economics

ST. PAUL, Minn. Ahead of this weekend’s Republican state convention, we’re taking a look at what the three Republicans who hope to run against DFL Senator Amy Klobuchar would do to balance the federal budget. The candidates are former state Rep. Dan Severson, Minnesota Army National Guard Capt. Pete Hegseth and state Rep. Kurt Bills.

Today we report on Severson. Tomorrow we’ll publish Hegseth’s views, and do the same with Bills on Thursday.

Severson was the first Republican to announce a run, launching his campaign a year ago. Ever since, he has been sounding the alarm about the size and cost of the federal government.

Washington, D.C. – The White House has released a statement regarding the capture of a top commander in African warlord Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army . As reported by The Ticket, the Obama administration expressed hopes that the recent capture of Major General Ceasar Acellam would lead to the capture of Kony himself.

Jay Carney, chief spokesperson for President Barack Obama, is quoted in the report as releasing the statement Monday, “The capture of Major General Ceasar Acellam is a testament to the resolve of Uganda and its military forces to work with regional forces to end the threat posed by the LRA… The United States is committed to supporting the people and governments of the region in their collective efforts, in coordination with the African Union and United Nations, to protect civilians and end this threat.”

Gov. Jerry Brown says voters face ‘day of reckoning’ to avoid budget pain

SACRAMENTO — Calling it “our day of reckoning,” Gov. Jerry Brown rolled out a revised budget proposal Monday that relies on increased income and sales taxes from a proposed November ballot measure to avoid deep cuts to K-12 and higher education.

Elsewhere in the budget blueprint, he said, cuts are unavoidable.

Grooming offences committed mostly by Asian men, says ex-Barnardo’s chief

The former head of Barnardo’s has said that grooming of teenage girls for sex in the north of England appears to be carried out “overwhelmingly” by men of Pakistani and Afghan origin and has called for an investigation into the issue.

Martin Narey’s comments came as nine men – one from Afghanistan and the rest with Pakistani backgrounds – await sentencing for being part of a child exploitation gang that passed vulnerable girls around a group of men for sex in the Heywood area of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, in 2008 and 2009.

He said he was not stigmatising the Asian community as a whole, noting that during his time managing the prison service – prior to joining Barnardo’s – sex offenders were “overwhelmingly white”, but the Labour MP Keith Vaz warned the BNP was setting the agenda.

Narey told BBC Radio 4′s Today programme: “For this particular type of crime, the street grooming of teenage girls in northern towns … there is very troubling evidence that Asians are overwhelmingly represented in the prosecutions for such offences.”

Diem Nguyen, woman seen in Springfield video attack, describes fight for her and her daughter’s life

SPRINGFIELD 11 What Diem Nguyen saw first was the knife.

After working late at her nail salon on Friday and picking up her 4-year-old daughter at the baby-sitter, Nguyen stopped for groceries at Ben Tahan Market on Belmont Avenue at around :15 p.m..

And that17s when she was attacked an unknown man with a knife.

I was just getting my daughter out of the car and the guy came up. I didn17t see his face all I could see was the knife.1

Nguyen, 43, is the woman much of Western Massachusetts was talking about over the last few days.

Video of the assault, recorded by the store17s security camera, was released by Springfield police in hopes someone would recognized the assailant.

Man shot and killed in attempted robbery

TAMPA, Fla. – Hillsborough detectives are looking for two suspects who shot and killed a man as he and his friends were leaving a bar near 56th Street and Harney Road.

Jarret Eitson, 21, died at the scene. Investigators say the men were trying to rob him.

Eitson’s friends were not hurt.

Deputies say the suspects took off in a black or dark blue late ’90s or early 2000′s sedan with dark tinted windows.

It is one of the biggest questions remaining about what happened the night George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin—who was it heard screaming for help on that 911 call? Zimmerman claims he was the one screaming. But now two forensic experts, using different techniques, both say the voice heard in the 911 call was not Zimmerman, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

One consultant used biometric voice analysis on the call, using computers to compare recordings of Zimmermans voice and the 911 call. The software gave the voices a 48% match, well below the 90% needed to be the same. “

The non-partisan guide, which can be found at STLtoday.com/votersguide, includes new features to help voters learn about the issues and candidates they will see on their ballots.

Users can enter their addresses to create personalized ballots. The guide also allows voters to browse all candidates and their backgrounds and learn about the ballot questions they will be asked to decide.

Ending a 15-year career as San Jose city librarian upon her retirement last week, IA noticed that the polite and reserved Jane Light also got in one last stab at San Jose District 6 council incumbent — and nemesis — Pierluigi Oliverio by donating $250 to the campaign of his union-backed challenger, Steve Kline.

Who could blame her? Just a few months before, Oliverio — roundly detested by San Jose employee unions for his views on pension reform and outsourcing their jobs — essentially proposed that, hey, everyone can be a librarian if the cash-strapped city just replaced retiring city library workers with community volunteers.

Bush 41 endorses fellow GOP moderate Romney

HOUSTON—If the Grand Old Party has a grand old man, his name is George H.W. Bush. Now the former president they call “Bush 41” has publicly declared that the 45th president of the United States should be Mitt Romney.

“He’s a good man,” Bush said during an appearance with Romney and former first lady Barbara Bush at his west Houston office. “He’ll make a great president.”

Bush’s endorsement of Romney comes as no surprise. Both have their roots in New England and in moderate Republican politics, as well as a family friendship dating back decades.

“I’m honored to have your endorsement and your support,” Romney said. “The president indicated we’ve been friends for some time. My parents were also friends of the president and the first lady.”
